Evaluation of the possibilities of reusing the liquid residue of an advanced sludge minimisation process as an alternative organic substrate to be used in the plant itself.
The thermophilic biological membrane process, already used in our previous experiments to minimise the biological sludge produced by water purification plants, results in the production of a liquid residue from membrane filtration. As part of this project, our team evaluated the possibility of reusing this residue as an alternative organic substrate to replace chemical reagents, such as methanol, in order to accelerate biological denitrification kinetics. The results demonstrated the possibility of such reuse, not only from the point of view of improved nitrate nitrogen removal performance, but also by demonstrating that the thermophilic biological membrane system is capable of significantly increasing the biodegradability of the treated matrix.
