Impact of thermophilic biological membrane treatment on greenhouse gas emissions in a wastewater treatment plant for sludge minimization.
Wastewater treatment plants are almost always associated only with the removal of pollutants from water, often neglecting the aspect related to greenhouse gas emissions. In this project, we evaluated the greenhouse gas emissions in the entire water treatment system, from the moment the wastewater enters the treatment plant, until it leaves as treated effluent and sludge. For the latter, we also considered 25 different combinations of treatment and subsequent disposal/recovery. The results showed that, in a conventional wastewater treatment plant, the insertion of a thermophilic biological membrane treatment for sludge minimization allows to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the entire system by more than 30%.
